Teachers Integrate Local Culture into Early Education
To preserve cultural heritage, a PAUD in Bali has begun integrating traditional arts and values into its daily curriculum. The school introduced activities such as Balinese dance, local storytelling, and craft-making using natural materials. This initiative aims to ensure that young children grow up appreciating their culture while developing creativity and social awareness.
Teachers collaborate with community elders who visit the school to share folk tales and demonstrate traditional art techniques. Children learn by observing and participating—painting batik patterns, playing traditional instruments, and performing short dances. These sessions not only build skills but also strengthen intergenerational bonds.
In the classroom, teachers connect cultural activities with broader learning themes. For example, when discussing shapes and patterns, they use motifs found in local architecture or fabrics. When learning about cooperation, they tell stories that emphasize unity and respect within the community.
Parents have responded positively to this cultural-based learning approach. Many say their children now proudly speak about their heritage and ask questions about family traditions. Teachers believe this awareness will help build identity and pride in being part of Indonesia’s rich diversity.
By bringing local culture into early education, PAUD institutions are not only teaching art but also nurturing values—respect, creativity, and belonging. These lessons help children grow into citizens who love their culture while being open to the world.
