Reading Corner Boosts Literacy Habits in Kindergarten
To promote a love for reading from an early age, a PAUD in Bandung has established a colorful reading corner in every classroom. The initiative aims to introduce children to books as fun companions rather than school obligations. Decorated with pillows, posters, and shelves full of picture books, the corners have quickly become one of the children’s favorite spaces.
Teachers carefully select storybooks with large pictures and simple words to help students connect visuals with vocabulary. They organize daily reading sessions, where each child can choose a book and share what they see with friends. The activity not only builds reading interest but also develops communication and observation skills.
Parents have been encouraged to support this program by providing storybooks or visiting the school during reading week. Teachers believe that family involvement plays a big role in strengthening children’s reading habits. Some schools even invite parents to become “guest readers,” making the experience more personal and inspiring.
Beyond language development, the reading corner fosters calmness and focus. It provides children with a quiet moment to imagine and think, balancing the active play of the rest of the day. Teachers note that students who frequently visit the corner show better concentration and empathy when listening to others.
As the program continues, the school plans to collaborate with local libraries to expand access to more books. Through small initiatives like this, PAUD institutions hope to raise a generation of readers who not only understand stories but also enjoy the lifelong journey of learning.
