SURABAYA – A cheerful and enthusiastic atmosphere filled the Alma Karya Foundation on Saturday, May 8, 2026. This first meeting focused on introducing colors and letters by utilizing the outdoor environment as a learning medium for children.
The activity began with a well-organized assembly, greetings, a prayer session, and singing cheerful songs accompanied by simple movements. This opening session successfully created a warm atmosphere and helped build positive relationships between the children and the volunteer facilitators.
During the educational game session, the children participated in a nature-based activity called the “Dry Leaf Treasure Hunt.” They explored the surrounding environment and collected fallen leaves from the ground. At the same time, the volunteers introduced the concept of recycling waste as a way to help mitigate flooding disasters. Through this activity, the children learned the importance of environmental conservation by utilizing natural materials responsibly without damaging living plants. The activity encouraged environmental awareness while allowing children to interact directly with nature.
The program continued with a Natural Literacy and Collage Creation Activity. The leaves collected during the treasure hunt were transformed into learning materials for early literacy and art activities. The children were introduced to the initial letters of objects they found, such as “D” for “Daun” (Leaf) and “B” for “Bunga” (Flower). The session then proceeded with letter-tracing exercises and creative collage-making activities. Using the collected leaves, the children created artistic works in the shapes of flowers, butterflies, turtles, and other imaginative designs. This activity encouraged creativity, strengthened fine motor skills, and enhanced early literacy development.
As the closing activity of the day, the children participated in a Cardboard Relay Race. The game was both exciting and educational, promoting concentration, teamwork, cooperation, and communication skills among the participants. The relay activity created a lively and enjoyable atmosphere while encouraging healthy competition and collaboration.
The first meeting concluded with a brief reflection session, during which the children shared their experiences and what they had learned throughout the day. Overall, the activities successfully combined environmental education, literacy development, creativity, and social interaction in a fun and meaningful learning experience. It is hoped that this positive beginning will encourage continued enthusiasm and active participation in the upcoming volunteer teaching sessions at Alma Karya Foundation.
