Building Literacy and Self-Protection Awareness Through Interactive Learning Activities
On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at 3:30 PM, the second volunteer teaching session was conducted at Sanggar Alang-Alang Surabaya. This activity was designed to stimulate children's language and literacy skills while also providing age-appropriate education on personal safety and self-protection.
The program began with a word-building game using the color-coding method. In this activity, each letter was assigned a specific color, allowing children to match colors and letters to form words. This learning method was chosen because it effectively captured children's attention and helped them understand letters and words through a more concrete and enjoyable approach.
Throughout the activity, the children were actively engaged and enthusiastic about arranging letters according to the given instructions. They discussed possible answers with their peers, explored different word combinations, and demonstrated a high level of curiosity. Through this activity, the children not only improved their recognition of letters and words but also developed concentration, simple problem-solving skills, and teamwork abilities.
After the literacy activity, the session continued with an educational discussion about body privacy and personal safety. The material was delivered using visual aids and simple explanations tailored to the developmental level of young children.
The children were introduced to private body parts that should not be touched or seen by others without permission. In addition, they learned the importance of protecting themselves, confidently saying “no” when feeling uncomfortable, and seeking help from trusted adults whenever they encounter situations that make them feel scared, confused, or unsafe. The discussion was conducted interactively, enabling the children to understand the concepts without feeling pressured.
The child protection education session received positive responses from the participants. The children actively answered questions and were able to identify several private body areas that should be protected. Through this activity, they gained a basic understanding of personal safety and the importance of recognizing body boundaries from an early age.
Overall, the second volunteer session was conducted successfully and provided a meaningful learning experience for the children. In addition to enhancing their literacy skills, the participants also gained essential knowledge about self-protection that can support their safety and well-being in everyday life.
