Collage Activities as an English Learning Medium for Children at Sanggar Alang-Alang
A volunteer activity was once again held at Sanggar Alang-Alang on Wednesday, April 22, 2026, featuring a cutting-and-pasting activity as a learning medium for introducing colors and shapes in English.
During this session, the children were invited to create simple collages using colored paper that they cut and pasted into various images, such as flowers and animals. The activity took place in the learning space of Sanggar Alang-Alang and was carried out in an active and enthusiastic atmosphere.
In addition to encouraging creativity, the university student volunteers integrated English language learning into the activity. The children were introduced to basic color vocabulary such as red, blue, yellow, and green, as well as simple shape-related words such as circle and flower. This approach allowed the children to learn English vocabulary in a fun and meaningful context.
The method was chosen because it enables children to learn through direct experience and hands-on practice. By seeing, pronouncing, and applying the vocabulary simultaneously, the children were able to understand and remember the material more easily.
Throughout the activity, the volunteers guided the children step by step in the processes of cutting, arranging, and pasting the materials. The children showed great enthusiasm and excitement while working on their projects and proudly displayed their completed artwork at the end of the session.
This activity also aimed to strengthen the emotional connection between the university students and the children before moving on to more structured learning activities in future meetings. In addition to benefiting the children, the program provided valuable experience for the volunteers in interacting directly within a non-formal educational environment.
Overall, the volunteer activity was successfully carried out and received positive responses from the children. Through creative collage-making and English vocabulary learning, the volunteers succeeded in creating a warm, enjoyable, and collaborative learning atmosphere at Sanggar Alang-Alang. The activity demonstrated that learning a foreign language can be both engaging and effective when combined with creative and hands-on experiences.
