Volunteer Teaching Activity Report: English and Mathematics Learning Program for Junior High School Students at Dharma Putra Swadaya
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, students from Group 23 of the Early Childhood Education Teacher Education Program (PG-PAUD), Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), conducted a volunteer teaching activity at the Dharma Putra Swadaya Social Unit (DPS), Surabaya. This activity was part of a community service and educational assistance program designed to support junior high school students in improving their academic skills through interactive and engaging learning experiences.
The program was conducted from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM and involved students from Grades 7 and 8. The session began with greetings, self-introductions, and a brief review of previous learning materials to create a comfortable and positive learning environment. A joint prayer was then held before the learning activities commenced.
For the Grade 7 students, the lesson focused on English, particularly the Simple Past Tense. The volunteers explained the definition, sentence structures, positive and negative forms, and the use of second-form verbs (V2). The material was delivered gradually through interactive explanations, classroom discussions, examples written on the board, and individual exercises that were reviewed together. The students showed enthusiasm throughout the lesson and actively participated by asking questions and completing the assigned tasks.
Meanwhile, the Grade 8 students participated in a Mathematics lesson focusing on Geometry and the Pythagorean Theorem. The volunteers introduced the concepts through simple explanations and real-life examples to help students understand the relationships between the sides of right triangles. Students practiced solving mathematical problems and discussed contextual situations, such as calculating the length of a ladder leaning against a wall. This approach helped them connect mathematical concepts to everyday experiences.
To maintain students’ motivation and concentration, both classes participated in an ice-breaking activity called “Writing Numbers with Body Parts.” In this activity, students were asked to write numbers using various body movements. The game successfully created a cheerful atmosphere, improved classroom engagement, and encouraged active participation.
The Grade 8 session also included an educational game called “Guess the Triangle,” where students identified different types of triangles based on the lengths of their sides. This activity encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while making the learning process more enjoyable.
Throughout the program, students demonstrated positive attitudes, enthusiasm, and active participation. The volunteers provided individual guidance whenever needed and encouraged students to confidently express their ideas and ask questions. The interactive and communicative learning environment helped students understand the materials more effectively while increasing their motivation to learn.
This volunteer teaching program aimed not only to enhance students’ understanding of English and Mathematics but also to provide university students with valuable experience in teaching, communication, classroom management, and educational service within a non-formal learning environment. It is hoped that the program will continue to inspire students to learn enthusiastically and develop greater confidence in their academic abilities.
