Learning Through Play: Building Confidence and Basic Skills at Dharma Bhakti Karya Kasih Putra Orphanage
The volunteer team from the social service unit conducted a play-based educational program at Dharma Bhakti Karya Kasih Putra Orphanage, located on Jl. Taman Dupak Bandarejo No. 4, Dupak, Krembangan District, Surabaya, East Java. The program was implemented over a period of three weeks, with one meeting held each week. Participants included kindergarten and elementary school children residing at the orphanage. Through a learning-by-playing approach, the program aimed to create an enjoyable learning environment while supporting the development of children's character and fundamental skills.
The program focused not only on academic aspects, such as introducing basic English and Mathematics concepts, but also on character education. Important values including mutual respect, self-awareness, self-protection, and confidence in communication were integrated into the learning activities. By utilizing interactive and enjoyable methods, the children were encouraged to actively participate in the learning process without feeling pressured.
The first meeting focused on the introduction and adaptation stage between the volunteers and the children. Establishing a comfortable and positive atmosphere was considered essential, as it would greatly influence the success of subsequent activities. The session began with the volunteers introducing themselves using simple English expressions such as “Hello” and “My name is…”. The children were then invited to do the same one by one. Although simple, this activity had an important purpose: to encourage children to speak in front of others and develop their self-confidence.
Following the introduction session, the children participated in an ice-breaking activity. Through simple games involving movement and interaction, the children became more relaxed and comfortable. The ice-breaking session also helped improve their focus and readiness before moving on to the main activity.
The primary activity of the first meeting was an educational Snakes and Ladders game. The traditional game had been modified to include learning elements such as numbers, colors, and basic English vocabulary. As they played, the children were asked to answer questions or mention specific vocabulary according to the squares they landed on. This approach transformed the learning process into a fun and engaging experience by integrating educational content into gameplay.
The educational game offered numerous benefits, including improving concentration, encouraging social interaction among children, and fostering cooperation and sportsmanship. Throughout the session, the children showed great enthusiasm and active participation.
At the end of the activity, the volunteers conducted a brief review of the material that had been learned. The session concluded with a prayer and farewell greetings as part of instilling positive values and habits. Overall, the first meeting was successfully implemented and created a warm, interactive, and enjoyable learning atmosphere that laid a strong foundation for the following sessions.
