SURABAYA – A joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere filled the Alma Karya Foundation on Saturday, May 25, 2026. This day marked the third and final meeting, as well as the culmination of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) program entitled “My Nature, More Fun”, organized by volunteer students from the Early Childhood Teacher Education Program (PG-PAUD) of Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA).
Following the successful exploration of colors during the previous sessions, the third meeting focused on the most highly anticipated main project: the Shibori Art Project. More than simply creating handicrafts, this activity was carefully designed to combine artistic expression, creativity, and hands-on learning through enjoyable experiences. The program was complemented by a fun animal coloring activity, making the final session both educational and memorable for the children.
A Creative and Exciting Final Project
The day began with a prayer and an energetic ice-breaking session that encouraged enthusiasm and participation among all participants. Afterward, children from both kindergarten and elementary school levels gathered in one large circle alongside their facilitators to begin the practical Shibori workshop.
The children were introduced to the traditional Shibori dyeing technique, which involves folding, tying, and dyeing pieces of fabric to create unique patterns. With great care and excitement, the participants folded their fabric according to their desired designs, secured it tightly with rubber bands, and dipped it into colorful dye solutions.
The most exciting moment came when the children untied and unfolded their fabrics. Cheers and laughter filled the room as they discovered the beautiful geometric patterns and artistic designs they had created with their own hands. This process encouraged creativity, patience, problem-solving, and confidence while providing an enjoyable artistic experience.
Animal Coloring Activity
While waiting for their Shibori fabrics to dry, the children participated in a free coloring activity featuring animal illustrations. They were encouraged to choose colors freely and express their imagination through their artwork. This activity further developed creativity, color recognition, fine motor skills, and self-expression.
Before the end of the session, a small showcase was organized where the children confidently came forward to display their completed Shibori creations. Each participant proudly presented their unique designs, demonstrating both their artistic achievements and the skills they had developed throughout the project.
A Heartfelt Closing and Appreciation
The final day concluded with a reflection session, during which the children shared their experiences and memorable moments from the three-week program. The facilitators also presented small appreciation gifts as recognition of the children’s enthusiasm, effort, and participation throughout the activities.
Since this was the last day of the observation and volunteer program, the farewell between the children of Alma Karya Foundation and the UNESA volunteer students was filled with warmth, friendship, and emotion. The atmosphere reflected the meaningful relationships that had been built during the program.
The event ended with a group photo session to capture the memorable moments shared by the participants and facilitators.
Through this program, the children not only took home beautiful Shibori artworks as tangible reminders of their creativity, but also strengthened their literacy and numeracy foundations, developed important life skills, and created unforgettable learning experiences that will remain meaningful long after the program's conclusion.
